2022.01.18 20:01 Tinfidelothp Came out to my parents as agnostic 10 yrs ago and later atheist. My mom reached out to me today and I finally decided to respond. It went better than I expected. Anyone have a similar experience? How did it go?

(Sorry, I thought I could just post the screenshots. Here's the copy and paste version.)
Mom Tinfidelothp, Do you Believe this? Sent a bible lesson she read this morning (I pray that you will receive this in the love that I’m sending it with. 😘) Do you Believe that the Word of God is Truth? You’ve been taught and you know in your heart what is right and wrong. Tinfidelothp, God is pursuing you and He will never stop pursuing you. Ponder this….. Do you believe that what you believe is really real? Do you believe that Jesus is Gods Son and that He came to earth as fully human and fully man and died a cruel death on the cross, taking all humankind’s sins upon Himself to cleanse us and Redeem us from sin and Satan. You don’t have to do anything but believe this and receive it as a free gift❣️it will give you freedom from the chains of sin and you will enter into an intimate relationship with God the Father and Jesus his Son❣️ **all the world has to offer you are lies because the devil rules the world right now and he is the master deceiver. Be careful what you believe. Go to Gods Word❤️it’s been proven, tried and true!! Gods Word=Victorious Living🙌 We’ve been studying Revelation in our Bible school class and it has made me realize just how much I want to be on God’s side❣️And I want all of those I love to be on God’s side… Read revelation, even if you do not understand it, we are told we will be blessed if we will just read it. ❤️
Also, I’m going to re-send you the “Why I Believe” sermon series by pastor Robert Morris. Please give them a listen. I have sent this same message to ex-wife but still my best friend. I love you both too much to not do everything I can to open your eyes and heart to TRUTH🙌😘
The order of the sermons is: •How Do I know there is a God? •God loves me? •The Bible is True? •Jesus is the Way?
Tinfidelothp Hi mom, thanks for sending this and I do know you do it out of love. You know that I have been searching for truth for a long time now and I have dug through a lot of arguments at this time but definitely not all.
At this stage, I appreciate information that is not based on an appeal to faith or belief. This sort of appeal would only work for you if you were lucky enough to be born into the correct religion. For example, if you were born into a Muslim or Hindu family in a Muslim or Hindu social group in a predominately Muslim or Hindu country, a reliance on the "shield of faith" or belief will only be a hindrance if you are wrong.
I appreciate more an appeal to reason. An example would be the probabilities involved in the complexity of the universe. Though, I have hit this topic pretty hard already. Even more than appeals to raw reason, I would be most interested in scientific arguments. These are arguments that must be able to be repeatedly testable and verifiable using objective observations.
Would you be interested in me providing you with a few sources that might better help you understand my current point of view? You definitely don't have to and I'm not trying to change your faith - just be understood. I love you very much and love and appreciate your love for me, always.
Mom Ok, I understand. And I'm glad you are still searching!
Have you listened to those podcasts I sent? They do answer some of the questions you might be asking or have questioned before. And best that I can remember, they do not come from a pure appeal to faith, although that is where some of it ends up. They are an explanation and presents some facts based on his beliefs. I happen to agree with him.
Of course you can send me some sources you are looking at. I would like to understand your point of view better. 🙅‍♀️ I too love you and always will! There is nothing that will ever change that love!❤️
Tinfidelothp I have, though I have to admit I have not been able to make it all the way through all of them. Unfortunately, having seen both sides of most of his arguments I was turned off by his liberal use of "straw man" tactics. This is a type of fallacy where you give the impression that you are refuting an argument but the real argument was not addressed or refuted, just replaced with a false one that is easy to pick apart. I found The Truth Project to be much more honest and appealing.
I have read dozens of books on both sides and, as I'm sure you have read most of the one's in favor of Christianity, here are a few books that might give a broad, introductory view into many of the arguments from the other side.
All That's Wrong with the Bible, Jonah David Conner
Why There is no God, Armin Navabi
Why Evolution is True, Jerry A. Coyne
The Demon-Haunted World, Carl Sagan
Let me know if you'd also like a list of some of my top books in favor of Christianity!
Mom I would like to know what Christian resources you have read. And I do agree, it's been a long time since I watched the truth project, but I remember I liked the way they presented everything.
Tinfidelothp Here are a few that stand out to me:
The Apologetics Study Bible
I Don't Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist, Norman Geisler and Frank Turek
The Truth Project Video Lecture series (This one holds a special place as I held onto these lectures desperately as my faith crumbled. It was a great appeal to what my mind needed but unfortunately the arguments ultimately didn't hold up for me.)
Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis
The Case for Christ, Lee Strobel
The Language of God, Frances Collins
Evidence That Demands a Verdict, Josh McDowell (though, this one is quite weighty and wasn't read completely) Josh also came to our school chapel one time and made his presentation there.
The Case for Faith, Lee Strobel
I will stop there because continuing on can get overwhelming. I have had almost a decade to read all of these books and even longer on the Christian side.
If you have any more recommendations let me know! If I haven't already read it I can do so and if it comes strongly recommended, I can try to read it again.
I don't want to overwhelm you with the other side. I will leave that at the four books unless you request for more. Please, don't feel the need to continue reading if you feel uncomfortable. I love you.
Mom I don't feel uncomfortable but maybe a bit overwhelmed. I don't feel qualified to get into a deep conversation about this; however, I want to check into some of it. I am so thankful that you are still searching and I pray that you will get the answers and clarity that you need and want. I will get back with you later on. The Christian books you have read are all good ones and ones that are mentioned most. If you don't mind, I will ask a pastor or two at our church about some of the resources you can read.
I'm really glad to have a conversation even if we agree to disagree at this point. Most of my belief comes from my natural nature and child-like faith. And from reading the Bible with the help of Holy Spirit. Love you❤️
